Hurtworld’s (http://www.tentonhammer.com/games/hurtworld) tagline is that it’s a very difficult game, and it delivers on that promise. Like most survival games, you’re dropped onto a strange map with no clothes, tools or resources, and you’ve got to find a way to survive and eventually thrive without succumbing to hunger, the cold, deadly predators, and of course other players.

To a beginner the experience can be scary and downright confusing, as you will probably have no idea what to build first and where to find resources. Fortunately we’ve done our due diligence and put together this quick tips guide to help take the sting out of being a Hurtworld beginner.
Gathering Resources

When I say gathering resources I literally mean gathering them up off the ground. When you first start out, you’ll have no tools available to chop or pick with so you’ll have to make due with whatever small pieces you can find on the ground.

Look for small pebbles and branches laying around. The rocks will give you stone and flint, and the branches wood. These are the building materials you’ll use to construct your first tools.

Tools like the pickaxe and the hatchet will allow you to harvest materials at a much faster rate from the trees, and larger stone outcroppings you’ll find around the map.

Crafting

To find out how many materials you’ll need to craft something, press Tab to open up your crafting menu. You’ll only have a few options that you’ll be able to make without the use of a workbench, but it’s enough to get you started.

Construct a pickaxe and a hatchet as soon as you have enough flint, stone and wood. Once you have those, equip them to your hotbar and start gathering from the trees/ fallen logs, and large stone outcroppings scattered around.

The next thing on your crafting list should be a workbench. The workbench can be placed anywhere, but you should set it near the beginners spawning area so that if you die (and you will) you’ll be able to find it again easily.
Ownership Stakes

The next “must craft” is an ownership stake. The ownership stake marks out a territory that you’llbe able to build a base on. The stakes take quite a bit of materials, but it’s nothing you won’t find within the starter area.

You’ll need:

Coal, Leather, Amber, Clay, and Iron

Coal , Amber, Clay and Iron are gathered from the different colored mounds that look like the stone piles. The leather has to be harvested from animals. When you’ve gotten enough of each, you’ll need to smelt the iron ore into ignots. Once that’s done, head to your workbench and construct your stake!

Find a suitable location (resources around, somewhat secluded) and place your stake to mark the site of your new base, and your respawn area. You can also add friends to your stake so that they can build within your territory as well. Just be sure to guard the stake from other enemy players, as it can be altered to include their name.

Building a Base

Building a base is very simple in Hurtworld, but it will take a lot of materials. The first thing you’ll need is a construction hammer. The construction hammer is like a workbench for your base, and it will allow you to craft and place the different components, like walls, floors and doors.

To open the construction hammer build menu, press F while holding the hammer.
Other Tips

There are a lot of other small things you can do to increase your odds of survival in Hurtworld, here are a few:

Weapons often have an alternate fire mode, like the spear. Press R while holding the spear to attempt to throw it at an enemy.
Place your important items in your hotbar. If you’re not infamous (killed another player) when you die, you’ll respawn with any tools/ items you had placed there.
You can eat raw meat. It won’t heal you for as much, but it won’t hurt you either.
Stay within the starter area as long as you don’t need anything else. Only venture into the interior after you’ve equipped yourself properly. It only gets worse.
Watch your temperature. If you get too hot or too cold, you won’t last long. Watch for the temperature bar below your food bar and adjust your attire appropriately.
